Volumetric (or dimensional) weight is a pricing metric carriers use to account for the space a parcel occupies, not just its actual weight. A large box filled with light items still takes up valuable cargo space, so carriers calculate a weight based on dimensions and charge you whichever is greater — actual or volumetric. Understanding it lets you predict real shipping costs and avoid overpaying for bulky, lightweight shipments.

The standard formula is Length × Width × Height ÷ Divisor = Volumetric Weight in kilograms, with dimensions in centimeters. Each carrier sets its own divisor: DHL, FedEx, and UPS use 5000, while EMS uses 6000. A 30 × 20 × 15 cm box with DHL gives 9000 ÷ 5000 = 1.80 kg volumetric weight. Chargeable weight is the figure carriers actually use to price your shipment — the greater of actual weight and volumetric weight. If your parcel weighs 1.5 kg on a scale but its dimensions produce 1.8 kg of volumetric weight, you pay based on 1.8 kg. If actual weight is higher, you pay on actual. The divisor reflects how efficiently each carrier packs cargo. A higher divisor produces a lower volumetric weight, which is why EMS is often cheaper for bulky, lightweight parcels — 9000 cm³ ÷ 6000 = 1.5 kg versus 1.8 kg at ÷ 5000. Express couriers like DHL, FedEx, and UPS favor faster air networks with tighter space economics, hence the lower 5000 divisor. Comparing both before booking can save 10–20% on light goods.
