FOB Pricing Best Practices

Update the exchange rate daily

CNY floats vs. USD and other currencies. Use the latest mid-market rate or your bank's selling rate to avoid margin erosion.

Verify the tax rebate code

Rebate rates (0%–17%) depend on the HS code. Double-check the latest customs tariff to avoid quoting a rebate you won't receive.

Round up, not down

For final customer-facing FOB quotes, round per-unit price up to 2 or 4 decimals and add a 2–3% buffer for unexpected port costs.

Common Questions

What formula does this calculator use?

+

Core formula: FOB = (1 − [Rebate / (1 + VAT)]) × RMB Cost ÷ Exchange Rate. When logistics & margin are enabled, we add domestic/port fees (allocated per unit) and multiply by (1 + profit %).

What does "FOB" actually mean?

+

FOB = Free On Board (named port of shipment). Under FOB terms the seller pays for inland transport, export customs, and loading onto the vessel; the buyer pays ocean freight, insurance, and import costs from that point onward.

Why is the VAT and rebate separated this way?

+

In China the supplier's RMB price is always VAT-inclusive (13% for most manufactured goods). At export the State Tax Bureau refunds a portion of that VAT back to the exporter. This tool subtracts the present value of that refund from unit cost before converting to currency.

Can I use this for CFR, CIF, EXW or DDP?

+

This calculator focuses on FOB. For CFR add freight to the total; for CIF also add insurance; for DDP add import duties, VAT and last-mile delivery. EXW simply means no domestic/port fees, no export customs — untick that checkbox to approximate an EXW export price.

What's a typical profit margin in FOB export?

+

Most experienced exporters target 10–20% gross margin on FOB. Competitive commodities may run 5–10%; custom-engineered or OEM products can reach 25%+. Always leave a buffer of 2–3% for exchange rate volatility and unexpected fees.
