A thoughtful SKU format saves hours of inventory work later. Follow these guidelines to build SKUs that scale with your catalog.
Encode Meaning, Not Just Numbers
Structure SKUs as Prefix-Category-Number (e.g., GF-ELC-001). The prefix identifies the brand, the category groups related products, and the number keeps each item unique.
Avoid Special Characters & Spaces
Stick to letters, numbers, and a single separator (hyphen or underscore). Spaces, slashes, and symbols break imports on Shopify, Amazon, and most ERPs.
Use Uppercase Letters Only
Many platforms treat SKUs as case-insensitive, which can cause collisions. Standardize on uppercase to avoid duplicates and make scanning errors easier to spot.
Leave Room to Grow
Use 3–5 digit padding so your numbering scheme doesn't break at SKU #999. A 4-digit format (0001–9999) covers most catalogs without renumbering later.
