UK Global Tariff (UKGT) Explained

Understanding the UK's post-Brexit tariff system & HS classification

97 Chapters · HS Hierarchy

All UK codes fall under 97 chapters (2-digit), then headings (4-digit, e.g. 0101), and subheadings (6-digit, e.g. 0101.21) — the international HS level that the UKGT builds upon.

UKGT = Post-Brexit Independent Tariff

The UK Global Tariff (UKGT) replaced the EU's Common External Tariff on 1 January 2021 after Brexit. It is the UK's own tariff schedule for imports, maintained independently by HMRC.

MFN + Preferential Rates

The UK applies MFN (Most-Favoured-Nation) rates to WTO members. Preferential rates apply to FTA partners — notably the UK-EU Trade and Cooperation Agreement (TCA), plus CPTPP, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, and more.

HS → UK 10-Digit Commodity Code

The 6-digit HS is global. The UKGT extends it to 10-digit commodity codes for import declarations (e.g. 0101.21.00.00), with additional digits for specific duty measures and statistical reporting.

Official Source

HS base data sourced from WCO Harmonized System 2017. UK-specific commodity codes, MFN duty rates, and tariff measures being imported from HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) Trade Tariff service.

Annual Updates

The UKGT is reviewed annually, with changes typically taking effect on 1 January. Always verify current rates with HMRC before filing import declarations.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about the UK Global Tariff (UKGT) & customs duties

What is the UK Global Tariff (UKGT)?
The UK Global Tariff (UKGT) is the UK's own tariff schedule for imported goods, introduced on 1 January 2021 after Brexit. It replaced the EU's Common External Tariff (CET) and is maintained by HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC). It applies MFN duty rates to imports from most countries, with preferential rates available under FTAs such as the UK-EU Trade and Cooperation Agreement (TCA).
What is the difference between 6-digit HS codes and UK 10-digit codes?
The 6-digit HS code is the international Harmonized System standard used worldwide to classify products (e.g. 0101.21 for pure-bred breeding horses). The UK extends this to 10-digit commodity codes (e.g. 0101.21.00.00) for import declarations, adding country-specific digits that carry the applicable UKGT duty rate and statistical reporting requirements.
Why are duty rates shown as "-"?
This tool currently displays the HS 6-digit base layer — the international classification hierarchy shared by all 97 chapters. The HS base defines the product classification but does not carry the country-specific duty rate. UKGT MFN duty rates, preferential rates, and the full 10-digit commodity codes are being imported from HMRC's Trade Tariff service and will be displayed here in Q3 2026.
How are import duties calculated in the United Kingdom?
UK customs duty is typically calculated on the CIF value (cost + insurance + freight) of the goods, multiplied by the applicable UKGT duty rate. Import VAT (20% standard rate) is then applied on top of the CIF value plus the customs duty. Some goods attract excise duty (alcohol, tobacco, hydrocarbon oils). Our calculator estimates the customs duty portion using a manually entered rate.
Where can I find official UK tariff information?
The official source is the HMRC Trade Tariff service at gov.uk/guidance/uk-global-tariff. It provides the full UKGT schedule including 10-digit commodity codes, MFN duty rates, preferential rates, anti-dumping measures, and suspensions. Always verify current rates with HMRC before filing import declarations.
