India ITC (HS) Tariff Explained

Understanding India's HS classification & duty structure

97 Chapters · HS Hierarchy

India's tariff follows the WCO Harmonized System: 2-digit chapters (e.g. 01), 4-digit headings (e.g. 0101), and 6-digit subheadings (e.g. 0101.21). India extends these to 8-digit ITC(HS) codes.

HS 6-Digit Base · 8-Digit ITC(HS) Coming

The 6-digit HS is the international standard. India adds 2 national digits to form 8-digit ITC(HS) codes that carry Basic Customs Duty (BCD), IGST, and Social Welfare Surcharge — these are being integrated Q3 2026.

BCD · IGST · SWS

India levies Basic Customs Duty (BCD), Integrated GST (IGST) (5%, 12%, 18%, or 28%), and a Social Welfare Surcharge (SWS) at 10% of BCD. Preferential rates apply under FTAs (APTA, SAFTA, ASEAN, etc.).

Duty on Assessable Value

India calculates BCD on the assessable value (CIF value in INR). SWS is then charged on the BCD, and IGST is computed on (assessable value + BCD + SWS). Our calculator estimates the BCD portion only using a manually entered rate.

Annual Union Budget Updates

India's Customs Tariff is revised annually through the Union Budget (presented on February 1), with the Finance Act setting duty rates. WCO HS amendments are adopted periodically. Always verify current rates with CBIC before filing a Bill of Entry.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about India ITC (HS) codes and import duties

What is the ITC (HS) Classification?
The ITC (HS) — Indian Trade Classification based on the Harmonized System — is India's official schedule that classifies imported and exported goods and sets customs duty rates. It is administered by the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC). The classification is based on the WCO Harmonized System, which India extends to 8-digit ITC(HS) codes that carry the applicable Basic Customs Duty (BCD), IGST, and Social Welfare Surcharge (SWS).
How often is India's tariff updated?
India's Customs Tariff is revised annually through the Union Budget, presented on February 1, with the Finance Act setting the duty rates for the coming financial year (April–March). Mid-year corrections and notifications are issued by CBIC regularly. Preferential rates under FTAs (APTA, SAFTA, ASEAN-India, etc.) are phased on scheduled dates. Always verify the current rate with CBIC before filing a Bill of Entry.
What is the difference between 6-digit HS codes and India's 8-digit ITC(HS) codes?
The 6-digit HS code is the international WCO standard shared by all customs administrations worldwide — it identifies the product but does not by itself carry an India-specific rate. India's 8-digit ITC(HS) code adds two national digits (the tariff item / statistical suffix) that further subdivide products and link to the applicable Basic Customs Duty, IGST slab, and Social Welfare Surcharge. This tool currently provides the 6-digit base layer; the 8-digit codes and rates are being integrated for Q3 2026.
How are import duties calculated in India?
India calculates Basic Customs Duty (BCD) on the assessable value (the CIF transaction value converted to INR). On top of BCD, the Social Welfare Surcharge (SWS) is charged at 10% of the BCD. Integrated GST (IGST) is then levied at the applicable slab (5%, 12%, 18%, or 28%) on (assessable value + BCD + SWS). Compensation cess may apply to specific goods. Our calculator estimates the BCD portion only using a manually entered rate; full BCD + IGST + SWS calculation will follow once the CBIC database is imported.
Where can I find official India tariff information?
The official source is the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC). The Customs Tariff, ITC(HS) schedule, notifications, and the ICEGATE online tariff search tool are published at www.cbic.gov.in. For binding classification (advance rulings) and the most current rates, consult CBIC directly or a licensed Customs House Agent (CHA).
