Pricing Formula

Understand how the calculator works behind the scenes.

1 Total Cost

Sum of all direct and indirect costs to bring your product to market.

Total Cost = Product Cost + Shipping Cost + Other Costs

2 Fee Rate Sum

Combine all percentage-based fees that reduce your effective revenue.

Fee Rate = Platform Fee (%) + Payment Fee (%) + Profit Margin (%)

3 Recommended Selling Price

The price you should charge to cover all costs, fees, and achieve your desired profit margin.

Selling Price = Total Cost / (1 - Fee Rate)

4 Markup Rate

How many times your selling price is compared to your total cost.

Markup Rate = Selling Price / Total Cost

Why You Should Use a Pricing Calculator

Smart pricing is the foundation of profitable e-commerce. Here is what a data-driven approach unlocks.

Maximize Profitability

Ensure every sale contributes to your bottom line. No more pricing guesswork.

Stay Competitive

Set prices that are attractive to customers while maintaining healthy margins.

Cross-Border Ready

Instantly convert prices across multiple currencies for international markets.

Plan Discounts

Calculate sale prices and promotions that protect your floor margin.

Scale Confidently

Know exactly what price to set as you expand to new platforms and markets.

Data-Driven Decisions

Make pricing decisions based on actual costs rather than intuition.

How to Set Profitable Prices

Small adjustments to your pricing strategy compound into meaningfully healthier margins over time.

Test Psychological Price Points

Try prices ending in .99 or .95. Small upward adjustments below mental price tiers can increase margins without hurting conversion.

Bundle Complementary Products

Combine low-margin items with high-margin bestsellers. Bundles increase AOV and absorb costs more gracefully than standalone items.

Use Tiered Pricing

Offer basic, premium, and deluxe versions. The middle option typically gets the most sales and highest margin.

Account for Returns

Factor in return rates (typically 5-15% for e-commerce) when calculating your effective margin.

Watch Competitor Pricing

Regularly check competitors' prices but don't just match them. Differentiate with quality, service, or unique features.

Review Prices Quarterly

Costs change over time. Review and adjust prices at least every 3 months to maintain healthy margins.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about pricing strategy and our calculator.

What is a markup rate and why does it matter?

The markup rate (also called the pricing multiplier) shows how many times your selling price is compared to your total cost. For example, a 2.5x markup means your selling price is 2.5 times your cost. This is a quick way to benchmark your pricing against industry standards. Most e-commerce products have a markup between 2x and 5x depending on the category and competition level.

What platform fee should I use for Amazon?

Amazon typically charges a referral fee of 8-15% depending on the category (most categories are 15%). If you use FBA (Fulfillment by Amazon), add another ~15-20% for fulfillment fees. So a total platform fee of 30-35% is common for Amazon FBA sellers. For FBM (Fulfilled by Merchant), use 15% referral fee plus your own shipping cost in the shipping field.

What is a reasonable profit margin for cross-border e-commerce?

A healthy profit margin for cross-border e-commerce typically ranges from 20% to 40%. Lower margins (15-20%) may work for high-volume, low-competition products, while premium or niche products can sustain margins of 40-60%. Keep in mind that higher margins provide a buffer for returns, advertising costs, and price competition. We recommend starting with at least 30% to ensure sustainable profitability.

How accurate are the currency conversion rates?

The calculator uses approximate reference exchange rates for quick estimation: USD 7.24, EUR 7.85, GBP 9.20, JPY 0.047, AUD 4.78, CAD 5.21 (all per 1 CNY). For actual pricing decisions, we recommend checking the real-time exchange rate on the day you list or adjust prices, as currency fluctuations can impact your margins significantly over time.

What should I include in "Other Costs"?

Other costs should include any expense not covered by product or shipping costs. Common items include: packaging materials, product photography, advertising spend (per-unit allocation), return/refund reserves, quality inspection fees, warehousing/storage costs, and customs duties if not included in shipping. Be comprehensive — underestimating other costs is one of the biggest reasons sellers discover they're not actually profitable.

How do I price competitively while maintaining my margin?

Start with the calculator's recommended price as your baseline, then research competitor pricing on your target platform. If competitors are significantly lower, you have three options: (1) Reduce costs by negotiating with suppliers or optimizing shipping. (2) Differentiate your product with better packaging, bundling, or branding to justify a premium. (3) Accept a lower margin temporarily to gain market share, then raise prices once you have reviews and sales velocity. Never price below your true cost just to compete — that's a race to the bottom.

Should I use the same pricing for all markets?

No — different markets have different cost structures, competition levels, and customer price sensitivities. For example, selling on Amazon US vs. Amazon UK involves different platform fees, shipping costs, tax obligations, and currency exposure. We recommend running separate calculations for each market using the appropriate currency, then rounding to psychologically appealing price points (e.g., $19.99 instead of $20.13). The calculator makes this easy by letting you switch currencies instantly and compare results.

How do I account for advertising costs in my pricing?

Advertising is typically calculated as a percentage of revenue (ACoS — Advertising Cost of Sales). For Amazon, a healthy ACoS is 15-25% for most products. For Shopify/Facebook ads, 20-30% is common. You have two ways to handle this: (1) Include an estimated ad cost in the "Other Costs" field as a per-unit amount. (2) Increase your target profit margin to absorb ad spend. For example, if you want a 20% net profit after 20% ad spend, set your profit margin to 40%. Track your actual ACoS weekly and adjust pricing if it consistently exceeds your estimate.
